David Derham’s wife, Helen lives with multiple sclerosis. The award-winning Belong at Home Atherton team have the privilege of supporting this inspiring couple. Last year, they made the couple’s dream come true when the made it possible for the pair to go for a spin in David’s sports car for the first time in years.
Since Helen was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 1990, she has had increasingly greater care requirements and now requires four home visits from carers every day to help her with various aspects of care.
Helen began using Belong at Home Atherton two years ago and, having received care from a string of other providers over the past twenty years, her husband David was keen to state that Belong at Home is the best they have known: “Belong at Home is the best company we’ve ever had. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Any questions or issues to do with Helen’s care are dealt with straight away, and we know all the staff who visit.”
More than just the medical care that Helen requires, Belong at Home provides the extra support to help the couple to lead the lives they want to.
“If we didn’t have Belong at Home, we wouldn’t get out,” says David. “Apart from providing for Helen’s care, they help her to do things she enjoys, such as going to the theatre. It would be impossible to do this for her on my own.
For me, Belong at Home are flexible, so that I can feel free to make appointments when I like.”
Belong at Home made one particular wish of Helen’s come true last year, which involved a spin in David’s precious Triumph TR6 convertible sports car, which he had recently purchased. The couple had loved driving around together in a similar model David owned in the late 80s, with the roof down. This would his had been impossible in recent years because Helen had been unable to get into the car. However, during the summer, the Belong at Home team made this possible again by providing the support and specialist equipment to help her into the car.
“We had a blast around with the top down. It was great fun to roll back the years, and Helen really enjoyed it. I’m very grateful to Belong at Home for making it happen,” said David.
